Explore all seven cities of Revelation on a six-day journey beginning and ending in Izmir, with visits to Hierapolis and the Christian heritage of Ephesus.
Starting in Izmir keeps the journey focused on western Anatolia, while two final nights near Ephesus allow a full day for the ancient city, its residential quarters, museum collections and the Basilica of St. John. Throughout the route, your guide connects the biblical messages with the communities, landscapes and civic life of Roman Asia.
- Route: Izmir → Pergamum → Thyatira → Izmir → Smyrna → Sardis → Philadelphia → Pamukkale and Hierapolis → Laodicea → Kuşadası and Ephesus → Izmir Airport
- Format: Private or escorted group
- Tour Focus: All Seven Churches of Revelation, biblical archaeology, the Lycus Valley and the early Christian heritage of Ephesus.
Important Historical and Biblical Context
Revelation 2–3 addresses communities in Ephesus, Smyrna, Pergamum, Thyatira, Sardis, Philadelphia and Laodicea. The tour visits the cities associated with those congregations rather than seven surviving first-century church buildings. Hierapolis adds the wider Lycus Valley context of Colossians 4:13. Polycarp belongs to Smyrna’s early Christian history, while the existing church dedicated to him and the Basilica of St. John represent later commemorative traditions.
Further context: Revelation 2–3; Acts 19; Colossians 4:13–16
Places You’ll Visit
- Izmir and Bergama — Smyrna’s living urban setting and the hilltop monuments of Pergamum.
- Akhisar, Salihli and Alaşehir — Thyatira, Sardis and Philadelphia, where the scale and character of the surviving remains differ considerably.
- Pamukkale and the Lycus Valley — Hierapolis and Laodicea, neighboring cities connected with early Christian communities.
- Selçuk and Kuşadası — A base for the archaeology and later Christian traditions of Ephesus.
Why This Route
Beginning and ending in Izmir avoids an additional domestic flight within the main itinerary. The sequence connects all seven church cities with a single inland overnight in Pamukkale and a two-night Aegean base for the final visits, giving Ephesus a dedicated full day.
Who Is This Tour For
Church groups, Bible study communities and independent cultural travelers seeking a complete Seven Churches circuit within a shorter holiday. It also suits returning visitors who have already explored Istanbul.
Practical Information
Arrival and Departure. Both transfers use Izmir Adnan Menderes Airport. Day 1 sightseeing depends on arrival time, and the departure transfer must allow sufficient time for the drive from the Ephesus area.
Pace and Walking. Days 2 and 3 combine substantial road travel with visits. Pergamum, Ephesus and the Terrace Houses involve slopes or steps; archaeological areas have uneven ground and limited shade.
Admissions and Services. Visits to the Terrace Houses and Ephesus Archaeological Museum are part of the itinerary. The quotation will specify their entrance fees and whether these are included, alongside hotels, guiding, transport and other admission tickets.
Church Access. St. Polycarp Church is a conditional arrival-day visit requiring advance arrangements. If access is unavailable, Smyrna’s biblical setting is still explored at the Agora on Day 3.
FAQ
Does this program visit all Seven Churches?
Yes. All seven cities are included: Ephesus, Smyrna, Pergamum, Thyatira, Sardis, Philadelphia and Laodicea.
How does it differ from the seven-day program?
This itinerary starts directly in Izmir and does not include the Istanbul stay or Istanbul–Izmir flight. It also gives specific attention to the Terrace Houses and the archaeological museum during the Ephesus day.
Is Patmos included?
No. A Patmos extension can be investigated separately, subject to suitable international sailings or a charter and the necessary travel arrangements.
Can the program be made slower?
Yes. An extra night can create more time for study at the inland sites or divide a long touring day. Changes are agreed before booking.
Tour Highlights
Day-by-Day Itinerary
6 DaysArrival in Izmir and the Heritage of Smyrna
Arrive at Izmir Adnan Menderes Airport and meet your OKTOGON Travel representative for the hotel transfer. If your arrival time and prior arrangements permit, visit St. Polycarp Church for an introduction to Smyrna’s early Christian history and its later commemoration in the city. Access depends on the church’s availability, so the visit cannot be included with every arrival. Gather for dinner and an introduction to the seven congregations, preparing for the contrast between the modern cities and ancient sites ahead.
Overnight: Izmir
Pergamum and Thyatira
Travel north to Bergama and explore Pergamum’s acropolis, with its steep theater, sanctuaries and commanding views. Discuss Revelation 2:12–17 in the setting of a city where public religion and political authority were closely connected. Continue to Akhisar for the more modest remains of Thyatira. Its message in Revelation 2:18–29 opens a discussion of work, social belonging and religious expectations in an ancient commercial community. Return to Izmir with a clearer sense of how different the seven cities were from one another.
Overnight: Izmir
Smyrna and the Inland Cities of Sardis and Philadelphia
Begin at Smyrna’s Agora, where the remains of the Roman civic center help place Revelation 2:8–11 within an active port city. Travel inland to Sardis to see the Temple of Artemis, bath-gymnasium complex and synagogue, discussing prosperity and the call to wakefulness in Revelation 3:1–6. Continue to Philadelphia in modern Alaşehir, where later church remains provide a setting for reflecting on endurance and the image of an open door. Drive onward to Pamukkale. This is a full touring day with an early start.
Overnight: Pamukkale
Hierapolis and Laodicea to the Aegean Coast
Explore Hierapolis, including selected monumental streets and the necropolis, and view Pamukkale’s white travertines. Colossians 4:13 connects the city with the neighboring Christian communities of the Lycus Valley. At Laodicea, walk through the excavated urban landscape and consider how wealth, water supply and civic confidence illuminate the questions raised in Revelation 3:14–22. Your guide will distinguish the biblical text from modern interpretations of its imagery. Continue west to your hotel near Ephesus or in Kuşadası.
Overnight: Kuşadası or near Ephesus
Ephesus and the World of Its Christian Community
Spend the day exploring Ephesus and Selçuk. At the ancient city, see the Library of Celsus, principal streets and Great Theater, discussing both Revelation’s message and the events of Acts 19. Enter the Terrace Houses to examine the decorated interiors and daily life of wealthy residents.
Continue to the Ephesus Archaeological Museum, where objects from the region bring the city’s religious and domestic worlds into closer focus. Visit the Basilica of St. John and discuss the tradition of the apostle’s burial. Together, the streets, homes, museum collections and pilgrimage architecture offer a rounded understanding of Ephesus across several centuries.
Overnight: Kuşadası or near Ephesus
Departure from Izmir
Transfer to Izmir Adnan Menderes Airport according to your flight time. The journey concludes after visits to all seven church cities and their wider regional setting. Additional nights near Ephesus or an onward Istanbul stay can be arranged for guests wishing to continue their journey.
