Explore all seven cities addressed in Revelation on a seven-day journey beginning with Istanbul’s Byzantine and Ottoman heritage.
In western Anatolia, discover how commerce, civic identity and religious life shaped the setting of each congregation. From the monumental streets of Ephesus to the smaller remains of Thyatira and Philadelphia, your guide connects the messages of Revelation with the places and communities behind them.
- Route: Istanbul → Izmir Airport → Pergamum → Thyatira → Kuşadası and Ephesus → Smyrna → Sardis → Philadelphia → Pamukkale and Hierapolis → Laodicea → Izmir
- Format: Private or escorted group
- Tour Focus: The Seven Churches of Revelation, the Roman province of Asia, biblical archaeology and an introduction to Byzantine and Ottoman Istanbul.
Important Historical and Biblical Context
Revelation 2–3 addresses seven congregations in the Roman province of Asia. Their messages reflect distinct local circumstances and theological concerns. The archaeological visits are to the cities where those communities lived; most visible remains are civic monuments or later buildings. Hierapolis appears in Colossians 4:13 but is not one of the Seven Churches.

FAQ
Are all seven cities included?
Yes. The program visits Ephesus, Smyrna, Pergamum, Thyatira, Sardis, Philadelphia and Laodicea.
Does the program include Patmos?
Patmos is not included in the seven-day program. An additional day and night can be proposed for a Patmos excursion, subject to suitable sailings or an international charter. It also features in the longer Antalya to Izmir and Patmos itinerary.
Why visit Istanbul first?
Istanbul introduces the later Byzantine and Ottoman setting. It provides historical perspective before the tour focuses on first-century communities in western Anatolia. Istanbul also provides a convenient international gateway, with onward flight connections to Izmir.
Can the itinerary be made less intensive?
Yes. Adding one or two nights allows the longer travel days to be divided and provides more time for discussion at the sites.
Tour Highlights
Day-by-Day Itinerary
7 DaysArrival in Istanbul
Arrive at Istanbul Airport and transfer to your hotel. Enjoy time to settle in before a brief introduction to the tour, depending on arrival time. Your guide will outline the seven church cities and explain how the opening Istanbul visits provide a later historical perspective on Christianity in the region.
Overnight: Istanbul
Byzantine and Ottoman Istanbul
Explore the Hippodrome, including its ancient monuments, then visit the Blue Mosque, Hagia Sophia and Topkapı Palace. The route brings together public ceremony, sacred architecture and imperial government. Hagia Sophia introduces the scale and ambition of Byzantine Christianity, while the mosque and palace reveal the Ottoman city that followed. Discuss these different historical layers before turning to the much earlier Christian communities of the Aegean.
Overnight: Istanbul
Pergamum and Thyatira
Take a morning flight to Izmir and travel to Pergamum. Explore the acropolis, its theater and sanctuaries, including the surviving altar foundations, while considering the message of Revelation 2:12–17 within a city of strong civic and religious identity.
Continue to Akhisar for the modest remains of Thyatira and its message in Revelation 2:18–29. The contrast between the two sites helps explain why archaeological visibility varies so greatly. Continue to the Ephesus area.
Overnight: Kuşadası or near Ephesus
Ephesus and the Johannine Tradition
Explore Ephesus, the first congregation addressed in Revelation 2:1–7. See the Library of Celsus, Temple of Hadrian and Great Theater, and consider the Artemis-related unrest described in Acts 19. Paul’s companions were taken into the theater while he was prevented from joining them. Visit the Temple of Artemis site and the Basilica of St. John in Selçuk, distinguishing the first-century narrative from the city’s later monumental and pilgrimage history.
Overnight: Kuşadası or near Ephesus
Smyrna and the Inland Church Cities
Depart early for Smyrna, modern Izmir, for a focused Agora visit and discussion of Revelation 2:8–11. Continue to Sardis, where the archaeological remains illuminate the prosperity behind the warning in Revelation 3:1–6. At Alaşehir, examine the later church remains associated with Philadelphia and reflect on the promise of an open door in Revelation 3:7–13. Arrive in Pamukkale toward evening. This is a long day of travel and site visits.
Overnight: Pamukkale
Hierapolis and Laodicea
Explore Hierapolis, linked to the Lycus Valley communities in Colossians 4:13, and view Pamukkale’s travertine landscape. Continue to Laodicea, the final congregation addressed in Revelation 3:14–22. Its monumental remains, water infrastructure and setting provide context for discussing wealth, dependence and the letter’s imagery. Complete the seven-city journey with time for reflection before returning to Izmir for the final night.
Overnight: Izmir
Departure from Izmir
Transfer to Izmir Adnan Menderes Airport for your departure flight. Leave with an understanding of the seven congregations as communities rooted in different cities, each facing its own circumstances. An onward connection or an additional stay can be arranged to match your travel plans.
