Explore the seven cities of Revelation, the Lycus Valley and, subject to confirmed crossing arrangements, Patmos on an eight-day journey from Izmir.
This program combines the complete Seven Churches circuit with a dedicated Lycus Valley day and a planned private crossing to Patmos. Two nights in Pamukkale and three near Ephesus provide time to compare neighboring biblical communities and explore the archaeology of the Aegean coast. Ancient city visits are complemented by Izmir’s market streets and opportunities for group reflection.
- Route: Izmir and Smyrna → Pergamum → Thyatira → Sardis → Philadelphia → Pamukkale → Colossae → Laodicea → Hierapolis → Miletus → Didyma → Priene → Kuşadası → Patmos → Ephesus → Izmir Airport
- Format: Private or escorted group
- Tour Focus: All Seven Churches of Revelation, the Lycus Valley, Paul’s farewell at Miletus and the Johannine traditions of Ephesus and Patmos.
Important Historical and Biblical Context
Revelation 2–3 addresses congregations within seven cities. Their archaeological remains help explain civic life, but are not seven surviving first-century church buildings. Colossians 4 links communities in the Lycus Valley; Acts 20 records Paul’s farewell at Miletus. Revelation 1:9 names Patmos, while the cave and monastery represent the island’s later devotional history. The authorship and dating of the Johannine writings involve scholarly discussion and are distinguished from local tradition.
Further context: Revelation 1–3; Acts 19–20; Colossians 4:13–16

Day-by-Day Itinerary
8 DaysArrival in Izmir
Arrive at Izmir Airport and transfer to your hotel. Gather for dinner and an introduction to the route, depending on flight times. Your guide will introduce the seven cities and their different settings, preparing you to read Revelation alongside the geography of western Anatolia.
Overnight: Izmir
Smyrna and Pergamum
Begin with Smyrna’s Agora and an introduction to the message of Revelation 2:8–11. Where the schedule permits, take in the view from Kadifekale, then walk through Kemeraltı and Kızlarağası Han toward Konak Square, with free time for lunch or Turkish coffee.
Travel north to Bergama for Pergamum’s acropolis, including its steep theater, Trajan sanctuary and altar foundations. Visit the Asklepion as time allows, discussing healing and religious life. This intensive day prioritizes the Agora and acropolis; the balance of market time and additional stops is agreed in advance.
Overnight: Bergama
Thyatira and the Inland Churches
Travel to Akhisar for Thyatira’s compact remains and discuss the pressures of commerce and religious belonging. Continue to Sardis, where the Temple of Artemis, bath-gymnasium complex and synagogue reveal the city’s wealth and diversity. At Philadelphia in modern Alaşehir, view later church remains while reflecting on endurance and the open-door imagery of Revelation 3:7–13. Continue to Pamukkale for dinner after a full day of touring.
Overnight: Pamukkale
Colossae and the Lycus Valley
Begin with a brief Colossae stop where access permits, introducing the community addressed by the Letter to the Colossians. At Laodicea, explore the excavated streets and public buildings and consider Revelation’s language of wealth and spiritual need.
Continue to Hierapolis for its necropolis, monumental remains and Pamukkale’s travertines. The later St. Philip sanctuary may be approached according to available time and walking ability. Comparing all three cities reveals how neighboring Christian communities belonged to a shared regional network.
Overnight: Pamukkale
Miletus and the Ionian Cities
Depart early for Miletus, where Acts 20 places Paul’s farewell to the Ephesian elders. Pause to reflect on leadership and the personal ties behind missionary travel. Continue to Didyma’s Temple of Apollo and Priene’s planned streets and civic spaces. Their sanctuaries and urban remains introduce the wider religious world of the Aegean. This is a long transfer and sightseeing day, ending at your base near Ephesus.
Overnight: Kuşadası or near Ephesus
Patmos and the Tradition of Revelation
Take a planned private international boat excursion to Patmos, subject to confirmed vessel arrangements, border formalities and sea conditions. Visit the Cave of the Apocalypse and the Monastery of St. John, considering the relationship between Revelation’s island setting and the mainland communities already visited. Return to Turkey after the visits and border formalities.
The sailing day may exchange places with the Ephesus program where logistics allow. If the crossing cannot operate, an alternative and its financial terms will apply as agreed before booking.
Overnight: Kuşadası or near Ephesus
Ephesus and the Basilica of St John
Visit the Basilica of St. John and explore Ephesus, including the Great Theater, major streets and Terrace Houses. Discuss Acts 19 and the tensions between Paul’s ministry, the cult of Artemis and local commerce. Continue to the Ephesus Archaeological Museum to connect the buildings with objects from domestic and religious life.
Lunch and a meeting with local Christians can be requested, subject to the venue’s operation and the hosts’ agreement. These encounters, when possible, connect historical study with the life of a present-day community.
Overnight: Kuşadası or near Ephesus
