DURATION
11 Days / 10 Nights
LOCATIONS
Istanbul / Gaziantep
AVAILABILITY
Year-round

Explore eastern Anatolia and Upper Mesopotamia on an eleven-day journey through Armenian churches, Syriac monasteries, mountain sanctuaries and some of humanity’s earliest monumental ritual sites.

From the Ararat landscape and Lake Van, travel through Tur Abdin to Göbeklitepe, Karahantepe and Harran, then continue to Mount Nemrut and Gaziantep. Biblical traditions, living Christian heritage and prehistoric archaeology are explored in their distinct historical contexts, alongside the connections between the region’s cultures.

  • Route: Istanbul → Van → Doğubayazıt and the Ararat region → Van and Akdamar → Hasankeyf → Midyat and Tur Abdin → Mardin → Şanlıurfa, Göbeklitepe, Karahantepe and Harran → Kahta and Mount Nemrut → Gaziantep
  • Format: Private or escorted group
  • Tour Focus: Biblical traditions of Noah and Abraham, Armenian and Syriac Christian heritage, Upper Mesopotamian archaeology and the kingdom of Commagene.

Important Historical and Biblical Context

Göbeklitepe and Karahantepe introduce the world of early settled communities around 12,000 years ago. Their monumental ritual buildings are often described as among the world’s earliest temples; excavations also reveal domestic life, so their functions continue to be studied. They predate the biblical patriarchal narratives by many millennia. Genesis names the mountains of Ararat, while the Durupınar formation is associated with modern Ark traditions and is not an authenticated discovery. Harran appears in Genesis; Şanlıurfa’s Abraham and Job associations belong to local religious tradition.

Further context: Genesis 8 and 11–12

Places You’ll Visit
