Your interests, your pace, and a journey through Turkey’s World Heritage. Turkey’s World Heritage places open very different windows onto the past: ancient capitals, archaeological landscapes, Ottoman towns, and remarkable works of sacred architecture. OKTOGON Travel creates a route around the places that matter most to you and the time you have available. Choose a regional journey or combine several parts of the country, with room to explore each place in depth.
- Duration: Flexible, according to your interests and available days.
- Route: Tailor-made around your chosen regions, arrival point, and departure point.
- Format: Private or escorted group
- Tour Focus: UNESCO World Heritage, archaeology, architecture, historic towns, and cultural landscapes.
Places You’ll Visit
The places you visit are selected together with you. A journey may concentrate on one region or link several through carefully planned road journeys and flights. Surrounding towns, museums, and complementary sites help explain the World Heritage places in their wider setting.
Important Historical and Biblical Context
UNESCO inscription recognizes a property’s Outstanding Universal Value. An inscribed World Heritage property is different from a place on a Tentative List. Our program identifies that distinction and does not describe every stop as UNESCO-listed. Heritage journeys can also include important museums, living traditions, and archaeological sites outside the inscribed properties. Further historical context: UNESCO World Heritage Center — Türkiye.
Planning Your Itinerary
Your daily itinerary is designed after your interests, travel dates, and preferred duration are known. The regional outlines below are starting points, not a single fixed circuit. They can be shortened, expanded, or combined while allowing realistic travel and visiting time.
Istanbul and Ottoman Heritage. Explore the Historic Areas of Istanbul, then consider Edirne’s Selimiye Mosque and its Social Complex, Bursa and Cumalıkızık, or Safranbolu. These places offer contrasting perspectives on imperial architecture, early Ottoman institutions, and domestic life. A route can concentrate on architecture or balance monuments with historic neighborhoods and craft traditions.
The Aegean and Classical Cities. Build a journey around Troy, Pergamon, Ephesus, Hierapolis–Pamukkale, and Aphrodisias. Sardis and the Lydian Tumuli of Bin Tepe can extend the focus to the Lydian world. Museum collections and time in nearby towns add context to the archaeological visits. Longer versions may continue toward the Lycian sites of Xanthos–Letoon.
Central Anatolia and Ancient Landscapes. Combine Hattusha and Cappadocia with selected visits to Gordion or Çatalhöyük, allowing extra travel days where required. Ankara’s Museum of Anatolian Civilizations provides valuable context even though a museum visit is not itself a separate World Heritage inscription. The emphasis can range from early settlement and Bronze Age power to rock-cut architecture and Byzantine painting.
Southeastern Anatolia and the Highlands. Focus on Göbeklitepe, Diyarbakır’s fortress and Hevsel Gardens cultural landscape, and Mount Nemrut. Longer journeys may consider Arslantepe, Divriği, or Ani, with the necessary additional days and appropriate seasonal planning. These widely separated places should be combined according to your priorities, rather than crowded into short transfer days.
Why This Route
